Saint Stanislaus Parish School was established in 1891 and opened with thirty-one students. The first classes were held in the rectory, staffed by a lay faculty. From 1901-1919, the school continued to grow under the leadership of various religious communities. In 1919, Saint Stanislaus Parish School began a long relationship with the Sisters of Saint Francis of Philadelphia staffing the school. Lay teachers joined the Sisters of Saint Francis to further the mission of Catholic education in Lansdale. The school community embraced the charsim of the Sisters of Saint Francis with a special concern for the poor.
Over the years, many changes and improvements occurred. The original school was built in 1925. Construction of the main building began in 1949 followed by O’Hara Annex in 1955. With a growing population in the 1960’s and 1970’s, plans took shape for the completion of Cahill Hall in 1977. At this time in the history of the Church, Catholic Schools flourished. Saint Stanislaus Parish School was no exception to this historical phenomenon.
Changes in religious life caused the Sisters of Saint Francis to leave Saint Stanislaus Parish School in 1989. At that time, the school population had grown to approximately 800 students in kindergarten through grade eight. Under the leadership of a lay faculty and administration, the spirit of the Sisters of Saint Francis continues to live in the mission of Saint Stanislaus Parish School providing a quality Catholic education and a call to a life of stewardship.
In 2002, with a vision for the future, the pastor and school administrator established a Visioning Committee composed of parents, parishioners, and teachers to examine the future needs of Saint Stanislaus Parish School. With the opening of a new local parish school, the enrollment of Saint Stanislaus Parish School was greatly effected. With the support of the pastor and the parishioners, Saint Stanislaus Parish School increased its offerings in the face of this situation. Some of the Visioning Committee’s goals and accomplishments included the opening of a Pre-School Program for three and four year old children, the establishment of a full time art teacher with a fully equipped art room, and opening of a school Prayer Room. Additionally, the Visioning Committee established five sub-committees Academic Programs, Facilities and Maintenance, Marketing, Enrollment, and Retention, Stewardship and Development, and Financial Planning.
The history of Saint Stanislaus Parish School is filled with a long line of dedicated pastors, priests, religious, lay teachers, and parents who continue to believe in Catholic education and the importance of sharing the traditions of Catholic heritage. |
